Thursday May 19 will be an interesting day; starting with French class in the morning and ending with a movie at the Maison du Quebec.

At Christine’s house for tutoring at 10AM.  Her husband Michel had set up a marquee in the backyard, but yesterday high winds blew the canvas off the structure.  We had some wind in the Intra-Muros area of Saint-Malo, but Christine and Michel live in the Paramé area of Saint-Malo on one of the highest hills.  They often experience much stronger winds than us.

On the way back from tutoring, we stopped at the gare to check with the Enterprise rent a car people.  We had reserved a car for next Wednesday for our trip to Normandy.  We wanted to check on the arrangements and make sure everything was in place.  Just as we approached the office door, we saw a young woman locking the door.  She was obviously an Enterprise employee so we asked if she had a minute to answer a couple of questions.  She was very nice and said yes.  So now we know that everything is in place for our mini-vacation next week.

Because today was movie night at the Maison du Quebec, we had an early dinner at 7:30PM at Chez Marcel’s.  A quick kebab and fries so we could get to the movie on time.

The movie was quite interesting, but it was difficult to understand the MV5BMTY2Njk2MzY5OF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNjc3NTU3OQ@@._V1_UY268_CR26,0,182,268_AL_French at times.  It was set in Quebec in the 1890’s and 1910’s.  Often the Quebec version of French is difficult for native French speakers to understand and even more difficult for us non-native French speakers.  At the end of the movie everyone was quite pleased about the movie, but there were some comments about how difficult it was to understand the Quebec French.  The title of the movie was Louis Cyr: l’homme le plus fort du mode, Louis Cyr: the strongest man in the world.  So Louis Cyr was a real person and the movie was considered a biopic.  You can find out more about Louis Cyr here.

This morning we walked to our favorite garden spot in Saint-Servan.  It is called The Roserie (http://roseraiesainteanne.free.fr/) and is in the middle of a retirement home.  There are 112 different species of roses in every color and every size.  It is amazing to see such beauty!  In the USA the rose bushes would have been destroyed by the insect Japanese Beetle but here they flourish.  Truly a lovely site!

In the evening we attended a concert at the “La Maison du Quebec” to celebrate the “La Fête nationale du Québec”.  The concert performer was Marie-Élaine Thibert who  is a Quebec adult contemporary and pop singer. She was first notable for being the runner-up in the first season of Star Académie in 2003, the Quebec singing idol reality show. It was a wonderful concert and great walking home, still in daylight, at 10:30 at night.
