MONDAY-27th and we had some plans for the day. There was no rain forecasted until the afternoon, so we decided to take a bus to the Rochebonne area of Saint-Malo. Rochebonne is where the digue starts at the north end of Saint-Malo. So the walk will take us the whole length of the digue.
The bus ride was great and the walk was nice. We had not walked on the northern part of the digue this year, so we saw what was happening there; new construction, buildings being repaired and school kids on the beach. The sky did get a bit threatening, but we had faith in the forecast. That faith let us down about 100 meters from Intra-Muros. It was not a heavy rain, but by the time we got back to the apartment we were wet.

TUESDAY-21st was marché day in the Intra-Muros. Sandy got some fresh fruit and vegetables. She also picked up some Thai food at the marché for dinner tonight. Then it was haircut day at Studio3. Then the walk to the Intermarché Super for the big items. Then the bus home.
Our afternoon walk took us past the basin and there we saw a magnificent 4 masted ship, the Juan Sebastián de Elcano. More on the ship at this link.

In the afternoon we walked to the harbor. Netflix is creating a mini-series based on the book “ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE” which is Anthony Doerr’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel. Part of the novel happens in Saint-Malo so Netflix was here to film some scenes and scenery. The Netflix film crew had a large catering area setup for food and they were working on their tasks. There were about 200 trucks worth of stuff brought into town for the filming. We saw some of the war rubble to be used in the filming, it was made of styrofoam. Hugh Laurie (House) and Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/Hulk) are the big stars of the mini-series. They were in town, but we did not see them.

WEDNESDAY-22nd this morning there was no water. There was no scheduled water outage so something was wrong. Sandy went to the Carrefour City in the Intra-Muros and purchased some drinking water. By 9 in the morning we had water. There had been a water line problem in another sector of town which had caused our problem. So now we have a some drinking water to keep in case of an emergency.
At 11 in the morning the plaque dedication was happening on the wharf by the harbor. The Spanish navy training sailing ship in the basin, Juan Sebastián de Elcano, was here to dedicate a plaque which commemorated the Frenchmen who sailed on the first circumnavigation of the world. There were quite a few French and Spanish dignitaries there for the dedication.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF THE PLAQUE FROM THE SPANISH NAVY – actual plaque is in Spanish and French
IN MEMORY OF THE 15 FRENCH SAILORS WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE FIRST AROUND THE WORLD EXPEDITION, WHICH, UNDER THE LEGISLATION OF THE SPANISH CROWN, STARTED IN 1519 AND WAS COMPLETED SEPTEMBER 6, 1522 BY JUAN SEBASTIÁN ELCANO ABOARD THE SHIP “VICTORIA”.
ON THE OCCASION OF THE STOPOVER OF THE SCHOOL SHIP JUAN SEBASTIAN ELCANO AT SAINT-MALO DURING THE 5TH CENTENARY OF THIS HEROIC ACT.
The Netflix filming crew was still working on the filming preparations in and around the Intra-Muros. After dinner we took a walk around looking for some filming, but did not find any.
THURSDAY-23rd we walked to the Rocabey marché. Meat, black olives and green olives were on our list. We stopped at the post office to pick up a package.
On the way back to our apartment we stopped at the harbor. Today a fishing boat had entered the harbor and unloaded some of its catch to trucks. Then they cleaned their nets before sailing away. The “fishy” residue from the nets attracted a lot of seagulls as seen below.

FRIDAY-24th we took the bus to Rochebonne and walked on the digue. It was a busy place, a lot of bicycles and walkers. Sandy purchased vegetables and fruit at the Intra-Muros marché. In the evening we took a walk and we did see an actor dressed as a german soldier. He was coming out of the local snack shop with a coke and cookies.

SATURDAY-25th and we had a drink at the Café de l’Ouest brasserie with a friend, Jean-Michel. He lives in the apartment building next to us. We first met him in 2019 and it has taken this long for us to finally get together for a drink.

SUNDAY-26th is a beautiful day for a walk on the digue. Just a little bit windy. The Netflix crew is completely gone, as if they had never been here.
